14 Henrietta Street presents Teatime Talks a series of talks inspired by the history and people of 14 Henrietta Street. By listening and engaging with visitors, historians, experts, local people, former tenement residents and their families, we continue to uncover, record and respond to the 300 year story of 14 Henrietta Street.
Join Artist in Residence, Julie Merriman, at 14 Henrietta Street, as she talks about her response to the building's history and conservation. Julie will also discuss her work process; she used an obsolete stencil and ink print technology, Mimeograph, to produce a series of prints which will be on display.
Julie says: The residency at 14 Henrietta Street was of interest to me as it offered a unique opportunity to examine the construction history of a single building, dating back to 1740. I was particularly interested in the 10-year-long journey to rescue, stabilise and conserve the house that took place from 2008-18. How did construction methods of the past align with those of the present and what were the problems and solutions that resulted from this process? I began the residency with an intense period of research, examining architectural and photographic material relating to this period.
I then walked around the house, locating my position in real-time and on the architectural plans. I had three questions: What was there previously, what is there now and how do the two meet in the fabric of the building today? Back in my studio, I began making a response to this research. A central element of my work methodology is the repurposing of obsolete office copying materials such as carbon paper, typewriter film and a stencil and ink printing system called mimeograph. Using a Gestetner mimeograph press c.1890, I created a series of fine art mimeograph prints, based on my observations, drawings and research materials. These will be exhibited after the talk.
When: 6 pm, Thursday May 8.
This talk will take place in person on the 1st floor of the Museum and can be accessed via lift. The talk will run for 60 minutes. If you have any queries please don’t hesitate to contact us on +353 1 524 0383 or email us at info@14henriettastreet.ie.
