Welcome Orlagh and Julie, our Artists-in-Residence

Dublin City Council Culture Company has appointed two Artists in Residence at 14 Henrietta Street for 2024. We welcome Orlagh Meegan-Gallagher and Julie Merriman who will consider a creative response to 14 Henrietta Street.

Orlagh and Julie will look at, read and listen to the collections of the museum, including oral histories collected as part of our Your Tenement Memories programme.

They will also learn from our team, our connections in local communities and speak to previous residents of the house. They will research and understand the story of 14 Henrietta Street and the lives of the people who lived there over 300 years.

Their new work may be permanent or temporary creative work for public presentation or engagement, and will be developed through co-creation with the museum team, visitors, or local communities.

Orlagh Meegan-Gallagher is a visual and textiles artist.

She says: “I like to make artwork as accessible as possible so I work in different materials, using a variety of techniques. This, combined with a focus on the social history of the building and using the stories of individuals, helps people connect with the history of a space.”

Julie Merriman is a visual artist who works with architecture and engineering as the cornerstones of her practice.

She says: “The fabric of a building can reveal much about its history, as well as an understanding of the people who occupied it over the years. In making a visual response to 14 Henrietta Street, I will read the building, examine its structure, surfaces, creaks and tics and allow it to tell the story.”

A third Artist in Residence will begin working with us in January 2025. Our Creative Residencies encourage makers and experts to pilot new partnerships with organisations. By bringing creative people and organisations together, and by connecting through culture and conversations, we will develop and share new ways of working. We create partnerships to try out ideas, test new approaches and add to the cultural story of the city.
